YesterMorrow: Balancing Sport’s Tradition with the Future Fan Experience

AW recently hosted the second webinar in its series, bringing together some of Australian sport’s leading voices to unpack a critical question: how can clubs evolve for the future without losing the traditions that define them?

Facilitated by AW Founder & Managing Director Bram Williams, the session featured Loretta Johns (former EGM Marketing & Communications, Sydney Swans), Paul Meltz (Head of Creative, Content & Broadcasting, Football Australia) and Alli Galloway (Head of Fan Growth, WNBL). Together, they explored the tension - and opportunity - between heritage and innovation.

AW shaped the conversation across five key themes:

Protecting the Rituals That Define the Game

Sport is built on ritual; pre-game routines, jerseys, chants and matchday habits passed down through generations. A key insight from the discussion was that innovation must feel intentional, not disruptive. Clubs can and should evolve, but authenticity remains the compass. The challenge is allowing the game to grow without losing the emotional threads that connect fans to its history.

Tech That Enhances, Not Replaces Tradition

Technology should deepen connection, not compete with it. From advancements in broadcast and AI to connected physical products that unlock digital content, innovation works best when it enhances storytelling and access. The opportunity lies in using digital tools to bring fans closer to athletes and the game itself - without altering the essence of the sport.

Modern Atmosphere vs. Sporting Purity

Matchdays are increasingly immersive, layered with music, activations and digital engagement. However, the discussion reinforced that the sport must remain the hero. Energy and spectacle should amplify the on-field action, not overshadow it. The most effective experiences elevate the game while preserving its integrity.

Commercial Growth Without Losing the Fans

Commercial sustainability is essential, but growth must feel additive rather than extractive. Successful clubs focus on strategies that improve access, content and overall experience, strengthening the relationship with fans as they scale. Protecting trust is just as important as driving revenue.

The Future Fan

Today’s supporters engage across multiple touchpoints, often using a second screen while watching live sport. Owned platforms, apps and first-party ecosystems are becoming strategic assets. At the same time, inclusivity, flexibility and authenticity are shaping expectations. The future fan values innovation — but still seeks the emotional heartbeat that defines a club.

The key takeaway: the future of sport isn’t about choosing between tradition and innovation; it’s about harnessing both with purpose.

For clubs and codes navigating this shift, success comes from knowing where heritage drives loyalty, where innovation fuels growth, and how the two together strengthen fan connection. AW offers unmatched expertise in marketing, audience insight, and industry experience to guide sporting organisations forward, while preserving what makes them truly valued.
